"Carpe Secunda" – "Seize the Second"
You have heard the phrase "Seize the Day" and probably the saying "Seize the Moment." But I have an even better one for you – "Seize the Second." What the heck does that mean?
Viktor Frankl, the famous Austrian Holocaust survivor, had a great quote in his book Man's Search for Meaning: "Between every stimulus and your reaction is a tiny space in which you can choose your response."
I have spent significant time working to incorporate that philosophy into my life over the past few years. A book that helped me tremendously along this journey has been One Second Ahead by Rasmus Hougaard. This tome (I have wanted to use that word for a long time) has practical tips for using mindfulness and attitude to improve our approach to events and be more present in the moment. I highly recommend you read it or reach out to me, and I will send you a summary.
In today's world of video calls and remote communication, it is challenging to stay present in the moment. If you gain nothing else from this book's synopsis, you will gain practical tips to become better at that.
Remember, we are our own worst critics. Cut yourself some slack, and do not expect perfection as you work to become more engaged and mindful in the moment.
