Thoughts on Perspective
As I roll into the fourth quarter of this crazy year, a lot has happened recently. I finished an MBA, moved one daughter to Philadelphia and the other to England, wrapped up one long engagement, and scaled back another lengthy client assignment. Now, new clients are starting up.
Times of transition make me reflective. Several thoughts have come to mind I will share over the next few posts.
Have you ever stepped back from yourself and noticed how you view your interactions with others? In times like this year, when I have been swamped, I tend to view interactions based on how they affect me. This perspective can take away from really understanding and focusing on the other party. Real progress happens when you can keep your focus on others.
In a similar vein, it is a valuable skill to be able to step back from situations. I recently interacted with Brad Stulberg in a discussion about his new book, The Practice of Groundedness. When faced with a challenge or a stressful situation, his number one advice is to step back and pretend that it is happening to a close friend. Think through what your advice to your friend would be in that situation. This exercise often calms us down, helps us quit worrying about things, or allows us to take action on something.
Thought of the day: Never make a big decision when you are running uphill. Wait and gain perspective after you crest the top.
